Hanwha Park Sang-won "Big motivation in the All-Star Game...""I want to be the best closer."

Hanwha Eagles pitcher Park Sang-won (29) had a bad start to this season. During the spring camp, he was excluded from the opening entry due to a bruise on his right arm.

Both the team and individuals were disappointed as they performed well with an ERA of 2.25 in 12 innings in 14 games after the call-up of social service personnel in the second half of last year. But he soon shook it off.

After registering in the first division on April 18, he showed consistency in the bullpen, and after the existing closer Jang Si-hwan went down to the second division due to turbulence, he took the finishing position. This was the first time I was in charge of finishing after my professional debut, but I am producing as much results as I expected.

Park Sang-won's performance until July is comparable to that of the 2018 season, when he recorded 4 wins, 2 losses, and 9 holds ERA 2.10 in 31 games, 35⅓ innings, 5 wins, 1 loss, 8 saves, and ERA 2.80.69 games.

As Park Sang-won played a sufficient role as a closer throughout the first half, Hanwha is currently aiming to enter the mid-range in the eighth place (37 wins, 4 draws and 45 losses).

Park Sang-won, who recently met with News 1 at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, said, "I was very sad and difficult because I couldn't help my strength due to severe bruises on my arm at the spring camp. I was more sorry because the team's performance was not good at the beginning of the season. Fortunately, my physical condition is fine now," he said.

"I have dreamed of becoming the best closer since I was a student. "I've grown my dream by watching Oh Seung-hwan and Jung Woo-ram," he said. "I've had many difficult times to give up baseball, but I'm really happy to overcome many hardships and become a closer."

Park Sang-won said, "Everyone is asking, 'Isn't the finishing position burdensome?' but I don't have that at all. "On the contrary, I'm enjoying a chewy game," he said. "I'm not good at finishing for the first time this year, but I want to maintain my good performance in the first half and become the best closer."

Park Sang-won's advantage is a fast fastball with a maximum speed of 153km. Some say that the breaking ball is weaker than the fastball, but it has developed with experience. On days when the control is good, they overpower the opponent with aggressive pitching.

Park Sang-won, who performed well in the first half, also participated in the All-Star Game as a coach recommendation for the first time since entering the professional league, which was a great honor and a stage of stimulation.

Park Sang-won said, "The All-Star Game was the best moment of my life. I enjoyed the festive atmosphere to the fullest and did my best in the game. "I am grateful to the coach who picked me and the fans who cheered me on," he said adding, "I got a lot of new motivation by playing in a place full of players who are better than me." "Next time, I want to raise awareness and performance more and play in the All-Star Game more confidently," he said.

Team senior Jung Woo-ram played a large role in Park Sang-won's rise to the current position. Park Sang-won explains that he has been taught a lot by Jung Woo-ram not only in pitching skills but also in life.

He said, "When I first came to the pro, I was just a rough stone. Then (Jung) Woo-ram met his brother and polished him smoothly. If Woo-ram hadn't met his brother, he would have already given up playing baseball. That's why he expressed respect, saying, "Wuram is like heaven's luck to me.

Park Sang-won's remaining goal this season is to advance to the postseason. Park Sang-won bowed his head with four hits (one home run) and three walks in three innings in the semi-playoff against the Kiwoom Heroes in 2018, Hanwha's last fall baseball.

Park Sang-won said, "I was too young at the time. "I don't know how to prepare in a short-term match, so I just did the same as the pennant race, and I got a bad result," he said. "I think I've improved a lot after experiencing failure." "If I make it to the semifinals this time, I will produce better results," he said.
